چکیده

Soil carbon sequestration is a whole new area of energy related research that provides a fundamentally new approach for dealing with climate change resulting from the substantial increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Carbon sequestration in soil is recognized to play a major role in allowing fossil fuels to remain a vital component of the national energy mix. At present soil carbon is measured by taking core samples and involves extensive laboratory work. We propose a novel nondestructive in situ method for carbon analysis using the Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) (n,n’() reaction. The feasibility of detecting carbon in soil was demonstrated using a clinical in vivo body composition facility, located in the Medical Department at BNL. A D-T generator, operated at 55 kV, irradiated 12"x12"x14" aluminum boxes filled with 70 lb. clean sand and mixtures of sand with 2%, 5% and 10% carbon powder by weight. The spectra were acquired for 1 hr and subsequently the carbon peaks were analyzed using the trapezoidal method for peak extraction. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is suitable for carbon analysis in soil, and it should allow sequential sampling of soil carbon within a soil volume of about 0.5 m with an error of about 1% or less. It is expected that, with final optimization, changes of about 1% in the soil carbon content would be observable with sufficient confidence levels.

"Hot background" of the mobile inelastic neutron scattering system for soil carbon analysis.

The problem of gamma spectrum peak identification arises when conducting soil carbon analysis using the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) system. Some spectral peaks could be associated with radioisotopes appearing due to neutron activation of both the measurement system and soil samples. The investigation of "hot background" gamma spectra from the construction materials, whole measurement sys...

Body composition to climate change studies – the many facets of neutron induced prompt gamma-ray analysis

In-vivo body composition analysis of humans and animals and in-situ analysis of soil using fast neutron inelastic scattering and thermal neutron capture induced prompt-gamma rays have been described. By measuring carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O), protein, fat and water are determined. C determination in soil has become important for understanding below ground carbon sequestration process...

First inelastic neutron scattering studies on thin free standing polymer films.

Glass transition studies in free standing polymer films have revealed values of the transition temperature, T(g), which were substantially reduced below the bulk for sufficiently thin films. Here we report on the preparation of two stacks of free standing polystyrene films: 70 films with a thickness of h approximately 107 nm and 140 films with h approximately 55 nm with equivalent total sample ...

Brillouin and Umklapp scattering in polybutadiene: comparison of neutron and x-ray scattering.

We report a comparison of high resolution inelastic x-ray Brillouin scattering to coherent inelastic neutron scattering for amorphous deuterated polybutadiene, done for one temperature in the glass phase and another one in the melt. The x-ray scattering proves to be by far the better technique for such a polymer within its present resolution bounds. The neutron scattering allows one to extend t...

Quantum rotation of hydrogen in single-wall carbon nanotubes

We report inelastic neutron scattering results on hydrogen adsorbed onto samples containing single-wall carbon nanotubes. These materials have attracted considerable interest recently due to reports of high density hydrogen storage at room temperature. Inelastic neutron scattering clearly shows the ortho±para conversion of physisorbed hydrogen in a nanotube containing soot loaded with hydrogen....
